Recycled Clothing Chapter
Recycled clothing and secondhand clothing graders are an integral part of SMART's membership. Their primary business activity is collecting, brokering, recycling, grading, and processing post consumer textiles. This activity is fundamental to our main principle of diverting solid waste from landfills. Grader members deal specifically with reclaimed clothing and other textile material that can be recycled. Other SMART members engaged in wiping materials and the fiber industry rely on the materials provided by this segment.
This chapter has a diverse global membership with members from New York to India and back again. The Recycled Clothing Chapter is dynamic, comprised of the industry’s top leaders. Collaborating throughout the year, this chapter members discuss current and important issues that affect our industry. The Recycled Clothing Chapter is focused on the challenges impacting our members and developing tangible solutions that benefit all of our constituents.
The Recycled Clothing Chapter has aided the association when addressing bans of secondhand clothing worldwide. The association is vigilant in defending the integrity of our members and our industry to media worldwide. Additionally, the chapter has been instrumental in dealing with issues related to foreign pre-shipment inspection issues, unfair trade practices and USA/ Canada border concerns. The chapter also founded The Council for Textile Recycling (CTR) and Shippers Of Recycled Textiles (SORT).
